Bookmarks in a document are invisible if the functionality that allows them to be seen is not activated. When this option is enabled, bookmarks are seen in the document as a pair of {} brackets at the beginning and end of the marked area. These brackets are not printed, they are only visible on the screen.
To activate its display we must go to the Word Options, to the "Advanced" section and there check the "Show Bookmarks" option:
